An element has an atomic number of 10 and an atomic mass of 20. How many neutrons does this element have?
The atomic mass represents the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of the atom. By subtracting the number of protons from the atomic mass, you can determine the number of neutrons.
Z = 10 (’Z’ represents the number of protons) and A = 20 (’A’ represents the total number of protons and neutrons):
Number of neutrons is (A - Z):
Neutrons = 20 - 10 = 10 neutrons.
